American Korean Friendship Society

The American Korean Friendship Society (AKFS) is a nationally recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit civic organization dedicated to celebrating and strengthening the relationship between the peoples of the Republic of Korea and the United States of America. Based in Atlanta, Georgia, AKFS operates as a non-political organization committed to fostering cultural understanding and diplomatic ties between these two allied nations.

The organization's primary initiative is the New American Hero Award (NAHA), presented annually to Americans of Korean ancestry who have made significant and noteworthy contributions to the United States. Since 2000, AKFS has recognized fifteen distinguished Korean American patriots through this prestigious award program, which includes a $25,000 prize that recipients donate to nonprofit organizations of their choice. This recognition program addresses a critical gap in how Korean American contributions to American society are acknowledged and celebrated.

In addition to the New American Hero Award, AKFS administers the Lifetime Achievement Award, honoring Americans of Korean heritage for their volunteer work and community advancement efforts. Recipients of this award receive a $5,000 prize that AKFS donates to nonprofit organizations selected by the awardees. The organization also organizes commemorative events, including Korean War remembrance ceremonies and armistice anniversary celebrations that honor the sacrifices made by Korean War veterans and strengthen the historical bonds between the two nations.

Founded in 1996 by prominent civic and military leaders, AKFS maintains a distinguished board of directors comprising business executives, retired military officers, former ambassadors, and community leaders.
